One of the other things that came up at the game sessions at CanGames was a type of talent that doesn't really fit into the 'Offensive', 'Defensive', 'Functional' intent categories.
There was one talent in particular, taken by a Character name Cornerstone, that triggered this train of thought. This was a talent that would draw opponents into attack him rather than other targets. The colour behind the talent was both that he was a very large and imposing obstacle, and also that there was a kind of mystic draw that he could use. He had another associated talent that would let him attempt to stop people from teleporting or moving away from him by other 'suprenatural' means.
There were a few other Confrontations where one character would see a companion falling, or wish to prevent something else from occuring to a ally. I rolled with it and let the characters use talents that seemed appropriate. Still these to things combined to make me think that I was missing something.
The Solution: Add a fourth Intent category, Reactive talents. But first:
Using Other Talents Reactively
Any talent can be used reactively, if the GM so rules. Only one reactive action is permitted per round. Unless a talent is designated as Reactive it suffers a -1 die penalty.
Example: Ant is fighting a group of assasins hire to kill a honorable police captain. He notices that two gunman have moved past him and are about to open fire on the captain. He takes a 'reactive' action to try to prevent this by jumping into the line of fire. He uses his Mobility 3- running [F] talent to get between the two. He rolls 2-dice (3 dice - 1die for a reactive use of the Talent). The GM rules that he simply needs a single basic success as the gunmen are not actively trying to prevent him from blocking there line of fire. Ant succeds. The gunmen then each roll there 2-dice against Ants Toughness 4- exoskeleton [D]. Ant rolls only 3 dice because his defensive rolls are still part of his reactive action.
Reactive Talents
A talent whose Intent is designated as Reactive does not suffer a penalty when used in response to an specific trigger. A specific trigger should be discussed that allows it to be used.
A "telekinetic catch" talent could be used to specifically catch a falling object or person. A telekinetic "block projectiles" could be used to help stop a bullet fired at a companion.
Only one Reactive talent can be used per round, and reactive talents can only be used to help others, not oneself.
This is a early design stage. But I am pretty happy with the overall feel. I remain as always very open to thoughts and suggestions.
